In 1964, the Kellogg Company and the Post Cereal Company, eager to cash in on the concept of freeze dried foods popularized by the space program, added freeze dried fruits to their cornflake cereals. However, consumers quickly discovered that the pieces of freeze dried fruit in the cornflakes had to soak in milk for nearly ten minutes before they reconstituted. By this time, the cornflakes were soggy and unappetizing.
