Chinese Club Moss

Lurking in the Chinese club moss plant is a brain-saving compound known as huperzine A. Huperzine A is an extract from a club moss (Huperzia serrata). Recent research suggests that Huperzine A could become the superstar of anti-senility regimens.

Chinese studies have shown a significant improvement in cognitive function in 60-percent of the people with Alzheimer's disease that took Huperzine A. This herbal extract's potential as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease was noted in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association).

Many experts concur that Chinese Club Moss may help improve Alzheimer's disease, although long-term safety trials have yet to be conducted. The use of huperzine A has risks and is currently in need of more study before considered safe. Major side effects of huperzine A include:

  • Risk of seizures for individuals who have or who have had epilepsy.
  • Potentially dangerous changes in heart rhythm

Other side effects that may be attributed to the use of huperzine A include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Drooling
  • Nausea
  • Slowed heartbeat
  • Stomach cramps
  • Sweating

In traditional Chinese medicine, a particular type of club moss identified as qian ceng ta in China or Chinese club moss in other parts of the world, has been used for centuries to treat inflammation and fever. While no scientific evidence supports these historical uses, Chinese club moss plants are known to contain chemicals that may promote the loss of water from the body. The resulting mild diuretic action may help to reduce swelling due to water retention.

Chinese Club Moss is available at health and food stores but true Chinese club moss is very hard to find on the U.S. market. Chinese Club Moss can be grown in Hawaii, but not in any other part of this country. Use carefully; according to manufacturers' instructions.
