Chunky Cinnamon Applesauce

Apple and cinnamon

Chunky applesauce is a great way to get your daily fruits. Making homemade applesauce is a great way to use your apples at harvest, too!

8 medium tart apples
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup red hot candies

Note: Several different apple varieties can be used for additional flavors in the sauce.

Place apples and water in a 5-quart saucepan. Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 20 minutes or until tender.

Mash the apples. Add sugar and candies. Cook, uncovered, until sugar and candies dissolve.

The texture of the sauce will often depend on the variety of apple, some cook up softer than others, providing a smoother textured sauce. For smoother apple sauce if it is too chunky, place sauce in blender or a food processor and blend until desired consistency.

Remove from the heat; cool. Refrigerate until serving.

Variation: Easy Slow-Cooked Cinnamon Applesauce

Making some healthful fresh home made applesauce is a snap when you utilize your slow cooker.

6 to 8 apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1/4 cup water
1-1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup red hot candies

Peel, core and slice apples into your slow cooker until it is about three-quarters full. Add about 1/4-cup of water and 1-1/2 cups of sugar. Add 1/4-cup red hot candies. Cook the apples on low for 8 hours or until apples are tender.

Use a nonstick potato masher to "mash" the apples into applesauce right in the slow-cooker. Serve warm, or refrigerate and serve cold.

Nutrition Nibbles

Applesauce contains many phytonutrients that act as antioxidants, such as catechin, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid. These fight free radicals and protect your DNA and cells from oxidative damage. Applesauce is the perfect snack for when you need a boost of nutrients and something sweet and delicious.
