Mom's Fruit Salad

Fruit cocktail for Mom's Fruit Salad

Mom's fruit salad uses *Cool Whip with Jello, fruit cocktail, pineapples, crushed pecans, miniature marshmallows and optional cherries.

If you enjoy a tropical flavor for a change of pace, we have Mom's tropical fruit salad variation, too.


2 8-ounce containers Cool Whip
1 large box Jell-O, flavor of choice
2 15-ounce cans fruit cocktail
1 20-ounce can pineapple tidbits
1 small bag crushed pecans
8 ounces miniature marshmallows
Optional: cherries, as many as desired


Drain fruit cocktail and pineapple.

In a big bowl, mix fruit, pecans and marshmallows.

Pour in powdered Jell-O. Mix in Cool Whip.

Mix well.

Refrigerate overnight.

Recipe makes 8 servings. Serving size: 1/2 cup

Variation: Mom's Tropical Fruit Salad

Fresh pineapple 1/2 pineapple, inner stem and outer skin removed, pulp chopped into bite-sized pieces
3 oranges peeled and cut into bite-sized sections, reserve 1 orange
1/2 cup shredded, unsweetened coconut
1/2 cup raw, unsalted pecans or almonds

Mix all the ingredients except one orange together in a bowl. Squeeze the remaining orange over the fruit salad and mix again. Serve immediately.

Cool Whip now has a sugar-free sensation you can use in this recipe to drastically reduce sugar. Alternatively, Cool Whip also has a fat free variety which is very good as well as a creamy, delicious reduced fat variety. This means you can customize this recipe in fat, sugar or both! And remember, Jell-o also comes in fat free and sugar free options.
